HAPO leads the Agios Thomas port cleanup in Preveza

March 2021

– Divers and volunteers from local fish farms join the cause

In response to the request made by Preveza’s Mayor, Mr. Nikolaos Georgakos, the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO) organized and led the clean-up of the scenic Agios Thomas port. The event took place on Friday, March 5, 2021, with several volunteers from THETIS Diving and a local fish farm–HAPO Member, helping out in the cause.

HAPO is sympathetic to all issues related to the environment, and gladly joins causes that aim to improve the quality of life and biodiversity in — and around — the sea, especially in areas where HAPO Members are active. A clean port hints at a “clean” sea, which allows for seabed regeneration and the protection of marine life — in an area that is rich in phytoplankton, fish and loggerhead sea turtles. At the same time, a clean and orderly port improves the quality of life for locals, and constitutes a major attraction for visitors.

On behalf of the Preveza Municipality, the event was joined by the Vice Mayor for Economic Affairs, Mr. Ioannis Dardamanis, and its Executive Director, Mr. Leonidas Argiros. On behalf of HAPO, the cause was spearheaded by Mr. Charalampos Kontonasios. Preveza’s Mayor, Mr. Nikolaos Georgakos, visited the port and congratulated HAPO for leading this critical initiative.

It is worth noting that this event is part of a comprehensive Environmental and Social Responsibility program drafted by HAPO and its 23 Members, in key areas across Greece where the sector is active, intended at both protecting the ecosystem and supporting vulnerable social groups.
