Greek Aquaculture: stability in production and sales, strengthening of exports, intense competition, improved prices, but concern about the increasing cost of production and intense concern due to continuing inflationary pressures, exchange rate fluctuations, and growing competition are the main conclusions of the 9th Annual Aquaculture Report issued by the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO), presenting the developments of the sector for the past year.
The annual Aquaculture Report has been published since 2015 and the aim is to serve as a source of information not only for the companies and suppliers of the industry, but also for any interested party who wishes to be informed about the development of a rapidly growing sector of animal food production worldwide, such as freelancers, students, academics, media, institutional bodies and politicians. It is the result of the collection and processing of production and financial data and presents the developments in the aquaculture industry.
The following chapters present fish farming at national, European and international level, focusing particularly on the production of the country’s two main farmed and traded species, namely seabream and seabass. The first and second chapters provide an overview of the activity in Greece, the geographical distribution of the farms, the production and financial data, and their trading. In addition, there is a brief presentation of the implementation of the Fisheries Operational Programme and of the Multiannual National Strategic Plan for the development of aquaculture 2014-2020.
The third and fourth chapters present aquaculture at European and international level where the volume and value of production as well as the structure of production by category and geographical distribution are presented. There are available data on Mediterranean fish farming for 2023 and, in some cases, estimates for 2024, while for aquaculture production at European and international level the most recent data available are those of 2022, mainly from the World Food Organisation.
