Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Patras and theHellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization

The Dean of the University of Patras, Professor Christos Bouras, and the President of the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO), Apostolos Touralias, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a framework for educational, scientific, and research collaboration. The agreement aims to leverage the University of Patras’ scientific expertise, research experience, and infrastructure to support innovation and sustainable development in the aquaculture sector.​

The Memorandum formalizes a long-standing and successful scientific partnership between the two organizations, which have already collaborated on numerous research projects and joint initiatives.​

The main areas of cooperation include:​

• Collaboration between the University of Patras’ research groups and laboratories to develop joint research projects, pilot applications, and participation in national and European funding programs, promoting innovation, sustainable sector development, and knowledge transfer. ​
• Development and implementation of environmental protocols and best practices. ​
• Support for the development and implementation of sustainability standards for Mediterranean farmed species. ​
• Protection of the marine and coastal environment. ​
• Development and application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies for aquaculture products. ​
• Promotion of circular economy practices within the aquaculture sector. ​
• Joint mapping, assessment, and systematic monitoring of protected marine and coastal habitats. ​
• Exchange visits involving faculty members, students, and postdoctoral researchers to foster applied research in areas relevant to the aquaculture industry. ​
• Joint organization of scientific and research activities, including conference presentations. ​
• Joint scientific publications and submission of collaborative research proposals. ​
• Any other research and academic activities of mutual interest, as agreed by both parties. ​

The signing ceremony took place during the 9th Patras Innovation Quest (Patras IQ), the Innovation and Technology Transfer Exhibition, where HAPO participated with its own exhibition booth and showcased its virtual reality video, offering visitors an immersive experience of aquaculture beneath the sea surface.
