Friday, February 21, 2025 – In the event hall of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Fisheries, and Aquatic Environment at the University of Thessaly, filled with students, professors, and parents, the atmosphere was festive as the day had arrived for the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO) to award, for the second time, its three annual excellence scholarships to students of the Master’s Program in “Mediterranean Aquaculture.”
In an emotional ceremony, the President of HAPO, Mr. Apostolos Touralias, awarded the scholarships to students Olga Deliopoulou, Marina Lydia Mavrommati, and Christos Charisis, who graduated with excellent marks from the program with the aim of pursuing careers in the dynamic, outward-looking, and steadily developing sector of Greek aquaculture. The event was introduced by the Director of the Program, Professor Dr. Panagiota Panagiotaki.
In his speech, after congratulating the Department’s Administration, graduates, and scholarship recipients, Mr. Touralias said: “… Now that you have completed your studies, you may be wondering, ‘Did I choose the right field?’ ‘Will I find a job?’ ‘Will I be adequately rewarded?’ The answer to all three questions is yes. The development of Greek aquaculture goes hand in hand with the need for trained scientific personnel, proof of which is that many among you are already employed in related companies…”
HAPO was also represented by Ms. Ismini Bogdanou (Director of Communications and Public Relations) and Ms. Katerina Litra (Director of the Technical Committee). At the event, the University of Thessaly awarded Mr. Yiannis Negas (Researcher A, Director of Research, ITHAVVYC) for his longstanding contribution to research in Greek aquaculture.

The recognition of women in a traditionally male-dominated field reflects the changing, progressing, and modernizing Greek society, and it serves as further motivation for HAPO’s actions in this direction.
